SUMMARY:Towards a Quaker History of LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Gay Rights
DESCRIPTION:2023 FRIENDS HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING AND LECTURE:\n“TOWARDS A QUAKER HISTORY OF LGBTQ+ INCLUSION AND GAY RIGHTS”\nSaturday\, November 4\, 2023\n11:00am – 1:00pm EDT\nFree – Virtual (registration required) \nSchedule of Events: \n\n\n11:00 AM Eastern Time / 10:00 AM Central Time / 8:00 AM Pacific Time / 3:00 PM Greenwich Mean Time (show my local time) –\n“Towards a Quaker History of LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Gay Rights” Lecture by Brian Blackmore\, Director of Quaker Engagement at the American Friends Service Committee \n\n\n12:15 PM Eastern Time –\nAnnual FHA Membership Meeting \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\nHeadline from the release of Towards a Quaker View of Sex \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: \nMany Friends are aware of Towards a Quaker View of Sex (1963)\, the first public and positive evaluation of gay and lesbian sexuality from a religious assembly\, and yet many other important contributions made by Friends to the advancement of gay rights during the middle to late twentieth century are less well known. Additionally\, the efforts to create greater inclusion for LGBTQ+ people in Quaker communities is rarely examined in historical studies of this era. This presentation seeks to stimulate the production of more scholarship on Quakerism and LGBTQ+ people by sharing key findings from over a decade of research. Come hear about the first social service organization for gay people in the United States established by Friends in the late 1940s\, the portrayal of Friends as the first happy gay couple in an American novel\, the important role Friends played in the development of the gay rights movement\, and the evolution of Quaker attitudes towards lesbian\, gay\, and bisexual people in a pivotal period of Quaker history. \nThis event is free but registration is required. A Zoom link will be distributed to all registrants approximately 24 hours in advance of the start of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\nBrian Blackmore \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nBrian Blackmore is the Director of Quaker Engagement at the American Friends Service Committee. A member of Gainesville Monthly Meeting (SEYM)\, and former Chair of the Religious Studies Department at Westtown School\, Brian recently completed his doctorate at Temple University with a dissertation project focused on the role Quakers played in the American gay rights movement. His research on the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in Quaker communities is featured in The Quaker World (2023). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Meeting: \nFHA Members are encouraged to attend the annual membership meeting. The Board will share updates from the organization’s past year\, and membership will be asked to approve the annual budget and the slate of nominations for Board service. \nREGISTER HERE
