SUMMARY:Gail Dines lecture on The Problems with Pornography in America
DESCRIPTION:As part of her discernment around growing issues and concerns related to the pornography industry in America\, local Friend Christine Reynolds is following her leading to provide ways for the public to become more educated on this topic. The first event in this endeavor will be a lecture by Gail Dines\, PhD\, speaker\, activist and author of Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality. \nThis is a free lecture\, open to the public\, and will be held at the New Garden Township Building\, on February 7th\, at 5:30 pm – reception and discussion to follow. \nLecture Description:   SEX(ISM)\, IDENTITY AND INTIMACY IN A PORNOGRAPHIC CULTURE \nFrom Internet pornography to MTV\, popular culture bombards us with sexualized images of idealized women and men\, and conveys powerful messages that help shape our sexuality. These pictures jump off the screen and into our culture and are now so common place that they seep into our gender identity\, our body image and especially our intimate relationships. The result is not a more liberated\, edgy sexuality\, but a mass produced vision of sex that is profoundly sexist – a vision that limits our ability to create authentic\, equal relationships that are free of violence and degradation. In this powerful multimedia presentation\, Dr. Gail Dines uses examples from pornography\, magazines\, television shows\, and movies to explore how masculinity and femininity are shaped by a consumer-driven\, image-based culture\, and the ways public images spill over into our most private worlds.

SUMMARY:PYM Couples Event: A Valentine's Day Gift to Each Other - 2/14
DESCRIPTION:pdf flyer to view or print \n“A VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT TO EACH OTHER”  FOR COUPLES \n10:00 AM TO 4:00 PM   SATURDAY\,   FEBRUARY 14\, 2015 \nAT FRIENDS CENTER \nGive yourself and your partner the gift of a day just for the two of you to explore: \nWhat are you grateful for?\nHow can I help you know yourself better?\nWhat sadness do you feel some days?\nHow can I be more genuine with you?\nWhat worries do you carry?\nWhat are you grateful for?\nAfter Pat and Brad have welcomed you and given an overview of the day\, they will have a conversation on a topic prompted by one of the questions listed above; or perhaps by something said as we introduced ourselves as couples. Each couple will have time for a private conversation on some topic of their choosing. \nNext we gather as a whole group to hear how the previous activity was experienced by others. Gathering in groups of three couples we continue our conversations with the support of attentive and confidential listening by the other couples. We will have a break for lunch. We will continue these small group conversations with breaks to review our experiences. \nPatricia McBee and Brad Sheeks bring forty years of experience with the Couple Enrichment Program of Friends General Conference\, and will guide the day’s activities. While there is no registration fee\, we will ask for a contribution to cover costs including child care if needed. \nFor further information or to register\, contact Brad Sheeks at bsheeks@verizon.net or Patricia McBee at pmcbee@juno.com or call them at 215-349-6959.
