SUMMARY:PYM Middle School Friends
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to see you all for our Winter Gathering January 31-February 2! The weekend will include small group worship sharing\, lots of laughter\, group games\, and new friendships as we build our MSF community. \nThe Winter Gathering workshop with Tara Rubinstein will build on earlier discussions at Annual Sessions 2019 and the MSF Fall Gathering. We’ll revisit the model of the gender and sexuality spectrum through games\, reflection\, and crafts. Queries we will explore together include: What is sexual orientation? How do you figure this out for yourself? How do you support your Friends as they figure it out?  \nOur workshop facilitator is Tara Rubinstein of Red Seeds (and former MSF coordinator!). Tara Rubinstein is a writer\, educator and mother. She has created and/or supervised programs for adolescents that support LGBTQ identity\, drag performance; spirituality\, anti-racism\, mythology and magic\, community building\, sexual wellness and body positivity. Her current youth programs include The Diana Circle – a feminist rites of passage group for girls ages 8-13\, and Brother Sun – a positive masculinity program for boys ages 8-10. \nFor more and to register\, click here\nDon’t forget the Middle School Friends Medical/Permission Forms if you have not yet submitted!

SUMMARY:Katharine Gerbner at Haverford College
DESCRIPTION:Quakers and Slavery in the Seventeenth Century\nCHS 104 Chase Auditorium\n370 Lancaster Ave\nHaverford\, PA 19041\nContact: Susan Penn spenn@haverford.edu\n  \nHaverford College’s distinguished visitor Katharine Gerbner\, McKnight Land-Grant Professor\, University of Minnesota will be giving a talk about her research on Quakers and slavery. \nEighteenth-century Quakers were leaders of the abolitionist movement\, but many seventeenth-century Quakers were slave owners. \nIn Pennsylvania\, William Penn was a slave-holder\, and leading English Quakers used their connections to Friends in Barbados to import enslaved men and women. \nProfessor Gerbner’s talk will examine how these seventeenth-century Quakers reconciled slavery with their peace testimony. I will end by asking what it means to truly reckon with the history of Quaker slave-holding today. \nThe talk is sponsored by the Quaker Studies Working Group\, and the Department of Religion in conjunction with the Distinguished Visitors Program.

SUMMARY:PYM Young Friends
DESCRIPTION:This program is an experiment\, speaking to the interest in service and witness expressed by Young Friends last spring at Continuing Sessions. YSOP is an amazing organization! Learn more about them at www.ysop.org. \n– The cost is the same as other Young Friends weekends\, thanks to support for the Youth Programs in the PYM budget. Scholarship is available\, as always! Do not let cost keep you from participating. ALL costs are included in the registration — travel\, meals\, and YSOP program fee. \n– Youth interested in participating should be prepared to travel to Philadelphia on Friday so that we can make the trip to NYC before the opening program begins with YSOP. You will need to leave school early and meet in Philly to catch a 1:00pm bus at the Greyhound Station.Travel costs will be covered by the Young Friends Program. We understand this impacts a school day!  It’s a holiday weekend\, and many people have Monday off from school and work\, which is why we chose this weekend. We will return to Philadelphia by 4:00pm on Sunday. \n“YSOP engages youth in meaningful service experiences through an innovative program that combines an orientation to the issues\, hands on volunteer work and reflection. YSOP is a Quaker organization\, grounded in Quaker values of respect for each individual\, simplicity and service. Our programs are non-sectarian. We welcome people of every faith and belief system\, including people who don’t ascribe to any faith.”  \n\nFollowing the opening program and dinner\, Youth\, Young Friends staff\, and Adult Friendly Presences will spend Friday night at 15th Street Meeting in lower Manhattan. The YSOP program continues on Saturday\, and Saturday night we will gather at Brooklyn Meeting with the opportunity to meet Young Friends in NYYM. We will worship at Brooklyn Meeting on Sunday morning before traveling back to Philadelphia.\n\nRegistration will be limited to 15 youth. If you have questions get in touch with Melinda Winner Bradley\, mwennerbradly@pym.org. \nFor more and to register\, click here\n

SUMMARY:PYM Worship & Care
DESCRIPTION:Institutional Assessment on Institutional Racism\nPresented by Vanessa Juyle\, The Institutional Assessment is a direct response to the events at the 2016 Gathering that encapsulates the long history of lived experience of People of Color of systemic racism among Friends. A similar assessment focused on Indigenous Peoples\, classism\, ageism\, and disability is encouraged in the future. We hope the results of this assessment may inform FGC’s inclusion of Friends from all communities.\nYou can read the full Institutional Assessment on Systemic Racism within Friends General Conference report here: https://www.fgcquaker.org/sites/default/files/attachments/IA%20Task%20Force%20report%20-%20final.pdf\n

SUMMARY:Race\, Power\, and Quakerism in South Africa - Friend in Residence\, Haverford College
DESCRIPTION:Are there Quakers in South Africa? How and when did they get there? What roles did they play before\, during\, and after apartheid? How do South African Quakers address issues of race\, position\, and power both within the Religious Society and the larger culture today? \nCome hear stories\, ask questions\, and share thoughts with Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge\, Haverford College’s current Friend in Residence\, and her husband Jeremy. \nNozizwe Charlotte Madlala-Routledge is a Quaker South African politician and activist who was South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Defense from 1999 to April 2004 and Deputy Minister of Health from April 2004 to August 2007. She is the founder and Executive Director of Embrace Dignity\, a non-profit campaigning for legal reform to abolish the exploitative system of prostitution and support South African women wanting to exit the sex industry. \nMadlala-Routledge is serving as Friend in Residence at Haverford College for the spring semester\, 2020. \nJeremy Routledge is a chemical engineer who is deeply committed to the realization of a society built on non-violence\, gender equality\, environmental justice\, and personal and social transformation. He is one of the founding members of Embrace Dignity and an active member of the international Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) community. He served as the Director of the Quaker Peace Centre in Cape Town\, South Africa\, from 1996-2002. \nThe lecture is co-sponsored by Quaker and Special Collections and the Quaker Affairs Office. \nProgram will be in Lutnick Library 200.
