SUMMARY:Building a Nonviolent Direct Action Campaign
DESCRIPTION:We’re living in strange times. While many of us are experiencing or standing in solidarity with the immediate suffering around us during the Coronavirus epidemic\, we are also aware of the bigger social needs so glaring in this moment of profound rupture. We want to use this time well and build our activist muscles\, so we can collectively push for real change on health care\, inequality\, climate change\, and more. \nHistory shows that nonviolent direct action campaigns are one of the best ways to build such movements. Let’s prepare now for the work ahead. \nThis online course will teach you the basics of nonviolent direct action campaigning. With proven methods of building people power\, campaigns shake up the status quo through tactics that range from fasting and boycotts to noncooperation and civil disobedience. If you’re feeling discouraged\, this is the perfect time to build your strategic skills in the methods of Gandhi\, King\, and Quaker suffrage leader Alice Paul. \nDuring our four classes together online\, you will learn how to:\n● Choose an issue where you can actually make a difference.\n● Identify the people who you want to pressure and where they are vulnerable.\n● Develop creative tactics to make your actions effective\, press-worthy\, and often fun.\n● Build your impact over time\, so the people you’re trying to pressure have to take you seriously. \nEach session will include a mixture of lesson and discussion. Recordings of the class sessions will be available in case you can’t make every one\, along with additional materials and suggested homework. \nThe course will begin Thursday\, May 7th and run the four Thursdays of May from 7 to 9 EST. \nDue to financial hardship from the Coronavirus\, I am moving to sliding scale pricing. My hope is that you will choose a price that feels like a real investment to you without making it a hardship. The group registration option remains\, which is a great way to lower the cost for everyone while building your group. Please let me know if you have questions or need additional financial aid. \nContact: Eileen Flanagan 215-400-1547   https://eileenflanagan.com/building-a-campaign/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:Northside Friends Meeting - National Day of Mourning for Covid-19
DESCRIPTION:Northside Friends Meeting is a Quaker Meeting located in the Uptown Neighborhood of Chicago\, Illinois. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and Illinois quarantine we have continued to worship and share fellowship over video from our homes and have drawn comfort and strength from this continuing connection to our community.\nAt a recent check-in video call\, we shared how we felt affected by the pandemic – we spoke of feeling sorrow\, frustration\, fear\, guilt\, and despair. Although these feelings were painful\, we felt lifted at being able to be together in our sorrow.\nWe know this crisis is far from over. We will experience more frustration and fear and guilt and despair and terrible\, terrible loss. But we know too that sorrow shared is sorrow halved and it serves none of us to carry our burdens alone.\nThere has been no call from the US government for a Day of Mourning to acknowledge the grief and loss caused by the pandemic thus far. As people of faith\, it falls to us.\nOur testimony of integrity compels us to speak truth – we will not deny our grief nor refuse to acknowledge our loss. Our testimony of equality compels us to see the privilege enjoyed by those whom the pandemic has touched lightly and witness the pain of those whom the pandemic has wounded deeply. Our testimony of community compels us to come together – as Quakers\, Chicagoans\, Americans\, humans\, and children of the Earth.\nWe invite all people to hold Memorial Day\, Monday May 25\, 2020\, as a Day of Mourning. We invite you to take time and to share your burdens with your loved ones and the communities from which you draw comfort and strength. We too will be worshiping together on that day and gather with you in spirit.\nWe also invite you to join with us in a visible action. At sundown wherever you live\, light a candle and step outside and hold a moment of silence for what we have lost together.\nMay 10\, 2020

SUMMARY:Friends in Fellowship with Nozizwe Charlotte Madlala-Routledge & Jeremy Routledge
DESCRIPTION:Join us online for an evening with Nozizwe Charlotte Madlala-Routledge\, former Deputy Minister of Defense and of Health in South Africa\, currently Friend in Residence at Haverford College\, and Jeremy Routledge\, former director of the Quaker Peace Centre in Cape Town.\nTimes of global crisis\, like now under COVID19\, are also an opportunity for social transformation and innovation. Join this talk with Nozizwe and Jeremy Routledge\, from Southern Africa Quaker Community\, as they share stories of hope and courage drawn from their own life-long struggle for peace\, equality and justice in South Africa. There will be an interactive Breakout room where you can share your own stories of connecting locally and internationally.  Come! Practice hope and courage with Friends.\nRegister here!\nHosted virtually by Friends World Committee for Consultation\, PYM\, Haverford College and Friends Center.\nNozizwe is a Quaker South African politician and activist who started her life of political activism under the tutelage of Steve Biko\, a leading light of the grassroots anti-apartheid campaign known as the Black Consciousness Movement. Madlala-Routledge moved on to join the ANC and the South African Communist Party\, which were both banned\, and was detained a number of times without trial. The latest period was serving a year in solitary confinement.\nQuestions? Email Grace Sharples Cooke
