SUMMARY:Wilmington Monthly Meeting - July 4th demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Black Lives Matter demonstration on Fourth Street in front of Wilmington Meeting at Fourth and West Sts. in Wilmington Saturday\, July 4\, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.  \nWe would like to invite folks from the Concord and Western Quarters.  We’ll be carrying “Black Lives Matter” and “There is that of God in Everyone” signs that demonstrators will themselves bring.  \nWe see July 4 as a particularly good time for a demonstration\, because it is the start of a country that was built on the backs of slaves.  “Independence Day”– HA! Clearly not for African Americans!\n

SUMMARY:Joint Quarter Program - Braver Angels Skills Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Concord & Western Quarters\n\n\n \n\n\nConversation Training for a Polarized Society\n\n\n\n\n\nIn December of 2016 … With passions still high following the election we assembled 10 Trump supporters and 11 Clinton supporters in South Lebanon\, Ohio. This would become our first Red/Blue Workshop. The goal was simple. We needed to see if Americans could still disagree respectfully – and just maybe\, find common ground. Some thought it wasn’t likely. We proved our skeptics wrong. https://braverangels.org/our-story/\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\nMadelena Rizzo and Jennifer Elam are experienced moderators for the Braver Angels organization. Braver Angels was organized in 2016 to help participants with opposing political views learn to speak with one another with respect and understanding while still holding onto their core beliefs. Madelena and Jennifer will conduct an official Braver Angels workshop designed to teach us these skills in this 2-hour online experience.\nMadelena Rizzo is currently in her fifth year in a dual law/clinical psychology graduate program at Drexel University. She attended Friends’ Central School in Wynnewood\, PA\, from 1st grade to 12th grade and credits the school with instilling in her a lifelong pursuit of the common good.\nJennifer Elam is a member of Berea Friends Meeting in Berea\, Kentucky\, with a PhD in school psychology from the University of North Carolina. She is a licensed psychologist who has studied Quaker spirituality and the lives of the Christian contemplatives and mystics.\nThis is a special event that requires registration by July 21. You will be sent the Zoom in an email confirmation.\nRegister by July 21 at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUofuqopzIvHtZA8pGbVpMB3fe3G8qBbNwp\nParticipants are asked to take an online module that takes about 40 minutes within a week of the workshop. That link is here: https://braverangels.org/online/online-skills-training/ You are welcome to complete the online module even if you cannot attend the workshop.\n\n\n \n\n \n\nBraverAgl_flyer20200722

SUMMARY:PYM Annual Sessions - Online
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\, \nIn light of the COVID-19 pandemic and after careful discernment\, the Sessions Coordinating Committee and the leadership of the councils of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting have thoughtfully and carefully decided that this year’s Annual Sessions (July 29 – August 2\, 2020) will move to a virtual space in order to preserve the care and well-being of our community. \nAlthough sadly we will not be together in a physical sense\, there are many exciting opportunities before us for a spirit-led\, fellowship-filled\, and fun Annual Sessions. With blessings and support from the Sessions Coordinating Committee\, members of the Community Engagement Team have begun looking at our options and capabilities to offer workshops as interactive video ‘gatherings’ online or at future events. \nWe will have more to share in the coming weeks. Be well and be safe\, Friends. \nQuestions? \n\nOlivia Brangan\, Community Engagement Coordinator\, obrangan@pym.org\nT.J. Jourian\, Events and Resources Coordinator\, tjjourian@pym.org\n\nCHILDREN’S and MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMMING FOR ANNUAL SESSIONS \nChildren’s Sessions is for rising K-Grade 5 and combines a “summer camp” experience and spiritual community for children with workshops\, stories\, art\, and music. \nThe decision has been made to move Annual Sessions 2020 into virtual spaces\, including Youth Programs. Children’s and Middle School Friends Sessions will have workshop time with the Resident Artist\, the poet Zenaida Peterson\, and make music with City Love. We’re cooking up ways to explore the theme “Using Your Voice!” together! \nAnnual Sessions is also a time for Families to be in community together in the Family Neighborhood and while we can’t reside there together this summer\, we’ll offer a space for parents to gather online for support and fellowship\, too.

SUMMARY:Naomi Madaras - The Fire of the Light: Abolition\, Conflict\, and Being Known in Quaker Community
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Annual Sessions Keynote – Friday\, July 7:00pm\n“We become true individuals [only in community]…” writes James Fowler. How does our community help us become known\, inside and outside of the Quaker world? As members of the Religious Society of Friends\, how do we reconcile with and activate our histories for the abolitionist work at hand? How might we access the fiery nature of the Inner Light in this calling\, and make a holy place at the table for anger and conflict?\nNaomi Madaras (pronouns: she/her) is a Master of Divinity candidate at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A graduate of Guilford College\, Naomi served as the program coordinator at William Penn House before transitioning to seminary to pursue a career in chaplaincy. Her clinical training has been in hospitals and nursing homes in New York where she provides spiritual care to patients\, families\, and staff. Naomi focuses on interfaith community-building\, death\, and disability in her work. She is a member of Chambersburg Friends Meeting\, a regular attender at Brooklyn Friends Meeting\, and grew up milking goats and climbing trees on a farm.\nRegister at PYM Annual Sessions page here\n
