SUMMARY:Conscientious Objection: Discerning and Documenting a Claim
DESCRIPTION:from the Quaker Religious Education Collaborative\nA series of sessions from 7:00pm-8:30pm: December 27 – January 3 – January 10- January 24 \nNow that the Selective Service System (SSS) registration for the draft in most states is automatic when getting a state driver’s license\, Quaker youth and other youth of faith rarely consider making a claim as a conscientious objector (CO). Youth miss the opportunity to discern and articulate their nonviolent beliefs and opposition to war. If a draft were ever reinstated\, they could have as little as nine days to prepare a CO claim before having to go before a local draft board. \nThis workshop is an opportunity for youth (both young men and young women) to consider their beliefs and to learn the process for documenting a CO claim if they feel led to do so. This workshop is also an opportunity for other people of faith (parents\, grandparents\, and community mentors) to learn how they can support youth to consider these important questions. \nWorkshop Leaders:\n• Curt Torell of Chapel Hill Friends Meeting\n• Andrew Wright of Durham Friends Meeting\n• Will Strayer of Durham Friends Meeting \nWorkshop Sessions:\nWill include watching a film on one’s own time before December 27 and participating in 4 Sunday evening Zoom sessions from 7-8:30 pm ET on\n• December 27\n• January 3\n• January 10\n• January 24 \nRegistration:\nAll participants must register by filling out this Google Form. A suggested donation of $5 (to help cover the cost of the license to watch the film Soldiers of Conscience) will be collected by PayPal once the workshop has begun. \nResources:\nWe will provide access for participants to watch “Soldiers of Conscience” and will provide a folder with various documents from Curt’s curriculum “Conscientious Objection: Is This for You?”. \nWatch the QuakerSpeak interview with Curt to learn more. \nTo register and get resources – click here.

DESCRIPTION:Angela P. Dodson’s book “Remember the Ladies: Celebrating Those Who Fought for Freedom at the Ballot Box” chronicles the earliest stirrings of the women’s movement in the United States\, arising out of the abolition movement\, and traces women’s political gains to the present. SUMMARY:Addressing Anti-Blackness Thread Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Addressing Anti-Blackness in and Beyond Monthly Meetings \nSaturday\, January 23rd\, 2021\, 9:00am – 2:30pm\, VIRTUAL \nCo-hosted with Chestnut Hill Meeting \nThis thread gathering calls us to unlearn and be accountable to our past and present anti-Black ideologies\, institutions\, and behaviors. Knowing that this journey has no finish line\, we bravely and humbly come together to move forward in our journeys with intention to continue to learn and unlearn\, through interrogation\, conversation and understanding in ourselves\, our faith community\, and with each other. \nDisengaging from Comfort or Decentering Comfort \nAs Friends\, we lean on our understanding that we need discomfort to learn to be present during silence\, and this discomfort is a growing relationship with spirit. This discomfort is the same discomfort we are growing with and building a relationship with when we are uprooting oppressive thoughts and behaviors. Racism and white supremacy means some of us are more accustomed to discomfort than others\, as well as that what is comfortable for some is dangerous and violent to others. We invite participants to acknowledge and address that tension and imbalance with us. \nSchedule: \n9:00am Optional worship – led by Chestnut Hill Meeting \n10:00am Introductions & tech review \n10:15am Walking with Anti-Blackness – Oskar Castro \n12:00pm Optional communal lunch \n12:45pm Interrogating and Weeding out Anti-Blackness – Tenaja Henson and Sarah Willie-LeBreton \n2:00pm Resources and Closing \nTo register and read the facilitator bios – click here
